Burdock Music Hall

Free your senses with Tafelmusik

If you live your life bold and with a bit of spontaneity, this is the night for you. The stylus fantasticus (“fantastic style”) was an unrestrained manner of making music in 17th-century Europe (related to improvisation). Have a drink or two and let the fascinating world of the “fantasticus” take over.

Burdock Music Hall

Baroque music meets modern poetry.

Travelling to find inspiration isn’t a new concept, and composers in baroque Europe left the comfort of their homelands to discover new countries and sounds. And surprise, surprise — when you get people of different musical cultures together, musical styles flourish. Galant music takes centre stage in this night of discovery, including poetry by special guest Ahmed Moneka.

Haus Musik: Boccherini
Oct 4, 2018

Burdock Music Hall
1184 Bloor St. West

Burdock. Beer. Boccherini.

What's better than one cello? TWO CELLOS! A crowd favourite instrument takes centre stage in this Spanish-inspired night of classical music revelry featuring members of Tafelmusik and percussionist Graham Hargrove on the music bones. Boccherini isn't a household name, but his sensual style will have you ordering sangria in October and ready to join in the fandango.

Tafelmusik's Haus Musik series sets out to reimagine classical music performance and presentation, and for this latest installment we take over the Burdock Music Hall in Toronto's west end for a relaxed night of classical music and brews. Come for the music, but stay

for the brewery and amazing food! â€‹

Music shines through the darkness
in this concert for the end of time.

‘Once everything is gone, there is art.’ In a world of political extremes and isolation, a crisis situation sometimes seems worryingly close. When the worst happens, the radio claims its place as communication of last resort, with music providing respite, comfort and solace.

The beauty of Mozart, and the contemporary sounds of Canadian composer James Rolfe shine through the darkness in this concert of music for the end of time.

Haus Musik sets out to radically reimagine classical music performance and presentation, and for this latest installment we’re joined by visionary director Amanda Smith. She sets the live music of Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra within the confines of a bunker, along with lone survivor ‘Alex’ whose only hope is the radio, and music.

Standing event. Bar open throughout. DJ sets pre and post show.
Strobe lighting may be used in this event.

Haus Musik: February 1, 2018

Longboat Hall, The Great Hall
1087 Queen St. West, Toronto

This February, Haus Musik brings the great outdoors inside as we discover long-lost secrets of the past. Forgotten manuscripts and the rare instrument known as the viola d’amore (the ‘viola of love’ – it is February after all) takes centre stage alongside DJ sets from (appropriately named!) Noble Oak.

This soundscape of the changing seasons will light a flame to banish the cold winter weather – so bring your friends, grab some drinks, and join us on Queen West for an intimate evening of music, imagery, dance and—always—a surprise or two.

More about Noble Oak: “Spanning a range of tempos and beat styles, this is music to love to, with a story packed into every song and melodies that lift you into the air.”

More about the viola d’amore: “What sets the 6 stringed viola d’amore apart from the rest of the violin and viola da gamba families is its second set of strings. These wire strings run beneath the fingerboard, and are not bowed or plucked, but resonate in sympathy with the playing strings, prolonging the tone and colouring sound silvery. The instrument has a variety of unusually shaped sound holes. The peg box is often topped with a carved head.”

CROSSING / TRAVERSÉE - NOVEMBER 16, 2017

Longboat Hall, The Great Hall

1087 Queen St. West, Toronto

Have you ever felt that sense of déja-vu, of being somehow connected to the past yet firmly rooted in the present? Is there something ancient that dwells in all of us, triggering our deepest emotions? Perhaps our lives don’t unfold along the linear path we assume they do. Our next Haus Musik breaks the boundaries of time itself as director Jennifer Nichols, musicians from Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, and dancer Jack Rennie take us on a journey that spans centuries, with music by LeClair, Rameau, and DJ Andycapp.

In the end, it’s all about love. And lavender. Lots of lavender.

HAUS MUSIK - FEBRUARY 2, 2017

LONGBOAT HALL, THE GREAT HALL

1087 QUEEN ST W, TORONTO

When NASA sent the Voyager probe into deep space, they loaded it with the best of humankind, including some music, just in case any aliens found it and wanted to, you know, take a listen. They included Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Stravinsky, some brainwaves and, er, Chuck Berry.

Haus Musik, Toronto’s new alternative classical night, goes one better on Feb 2, bringing this spirit of unearthly discovery to life at Longboat Hall. Live baroque music by the likes of Henry Purcell and King Henry the 8th, no less, rubs shoulders with the outer limits. Adventure ensues as we experience the world around us for the first time through the eyes of the recently awoken Leeka, a curious and vivacious young woman from a galaxy far away.

Be transported by sounds of the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra along side galactic baroque-inspired electronics by Acote, as Leeka makes sense of the world around her.

There will probably be some teaspoons as well...
