Ahmed Moneka is the artist in residence with Driftwood Theatre Group: Debut. Other Credits (selected): Abduction from the Seraglio (Canadian Opera Company)IN Sundry Languages (Toronto Laboratory Theatre) Romeo & Juliet in Baghdad (Iraqi Theatre Company). Ahmed is an Iraqi theatre artist and refugee now making Toronto his home. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of Baghdad, where he began to focus on theatre which explored human rights, freedom. In 2015, the film The Society (the first film in Iraq to speak of gay men, in which he was performing) screened at TIFF, he received threats from militias in Baghdad, preventing his return. In his new home of Toronto, he continues his artistic pursuit to “help build a society where there is love” Upcoming: Ahmed is currently in creating a project with Jesse LaVercombe and Seth Bockley The Epic of Gilgamesh. Drummer and vocalist (MOSKITO BAR, Moneka Arabic Jazz, Moneka Monologue), Music and dance facilitator (Turtle House Art Play Centre).
